Canadian Spruce Tops

Dave and Deb Bennyhoff stumbled into the spruce top market in 2003 and it was a perfect supplement for their Christmas tree sales. This business allows a carryover from the seasonal closing of the restaurant, Minnetonka Drive In, into the Christmas sales. 

We stopped selling Christmas trees after 2019 and then experienced a blip with spruce tops in 2020 as a result of COVD. Our spruce tops are cut in northern Manitoba, and no one was allowed to travel north in order to protect the indigenous/First Nation population who have little access to medical care. Then, our beloved partner, Jerry LaForte became ill and passed away.

We are blessed to have now found a new partner from The Pas, Manitoba. Rodney has years of work with the DNR in Manitoba and has a great relationship with the First Nation leaders and employs tribe members to cut our product. As of 2024, we are rebuilding and are very excited!

Black Spruce are ideal for decorating; other types of pine (such as white), dry up and loose needles quickly.  They grow in bogs, which are numerous in northern Manitoba. But unlike northern Minnesota or Wisconsin, black spruce in Manitoba has a different growing season with extended periods of sunlight during the summer. This allows them to grow vibrant green and branches thick with needles and often cones. We also wait for a hard frost before starting to cut our product. The sap stops flowing at that point and the tops stay green and fresh long into March. We take pride in offering this product both wholesale and retail. Both are offered from our lot at the Minnetonka Drive In in Spring Park.
